Below is a selection of messages that we have received since the beginning of the campaign. If they seem overwhelmingly positive it's because - almost without exception - the feedback we have had has welcomed the idea of a referendum.

" About time somebody made a move like this!! Ideally, I'd hope that an elected mayor would work well in tandem with a supra-regional body that covers Liverpool's natural (and not municipal) economic, social and cultural boundaries. That really would give our city some clout. I wish you all the best of luck with the campaign."

John - Wavertree

" It's an absolutely brilliant idea. I'm really impressed that someone has the courage to take the bold step and make it happen. It's exactly what this city needs. I get so mad when i see those at the town hall using the city of liverpool as a smokescreen for their own egotistical amibitions. It has to change. It must change."

Phil - Allerton

" I think this is a great initiative and this is the right time for the elected mayor debate to be back on the agenda."

Nick

" I totally agree we should have an elected Mayor. I am fed up with the city council puppets and capital of culture Muppets that claim to run my city. This is our one opportunity as we move towards 2008 to get it right, and truly embrace the European culture and instead we embracing and building an economy of bars and apartments that cannot be sustainable. Our own people are being forced out of the by over inflated and expensive house prices. The current city council only think short term, where is the sustainability. Who is accountable? No body is taking responsibility for their actions. We are being run by a bunch of unprofessional and narrow minded idiots who claim to be passionate about this city. Capital of Culture...more like Carry On Culture...you’re having a laugh! "

Nikki - Garston

" I am all for an elected mayor. However I am cynical that some political party yes man would be foisted upon us to do the governments or oppositions bidding. The mayor should be independent of such and serve the city and its people and not the policies of the major parties. "

Mike

" The current problem with local politics is that it is to parochial, not enough of the big decisions are being made, and consequently the city is suffering. With an elected mayor we may see the same benefits that the people of Barcelona,New York and others have seen.Great idea. "

Graham

" I had just sent a letter to the Echo on this very subject when I heard of your brilliant campaign. I wish you the very best of luck in your quest as there is a real need for independent, common sense decision making during what is a critical period in our city's history history. Should you prove successful we would then face the problem of who to elect."

John

" An elected Mayor for Liverpool is a great idea; an elected mayor for a greater Liverpool area taking in the neighbouring districts on this side of the river is even better. The debate over an elected mayor needs to stimulate a paralle debate over this issue."

Neil

" I would like to register my support for the campaign to elect a Mayor for Liverpool. However being a resident of the Sefton MBC area it seems I am not able to sign the petition! this is a shame. I am sure there are a significant number of people in the surrounding authorities who would also support this campaign given the chance. Good luck. "

Paul - Sefton

" it is a constant issue running a small business in Liverpool when the private business sector is often disscouraged by apalling civic leadership, what a great idea it works extremely well for London. "

Don

" I agree with Liam Fogarty, Liverpool desperately needs an elected Mayor. We cannot continue with the 'amateurs, in control at the moment."

Eric

" It's about leadership and vision - plus clear 'rules of the game' for developers and investors so that they have certainty in terms of their dealings with the planning authority. The current leadership has not dealt effectively with this issue and that begs the question 'would things be better if we ran the city another way?' I think they might. "

Dougal

" As a Wirral person unlike some of my brethren I regard Liverpool as "my home City" and I am very proud of it. An elected Mayor might well provide the impetus and drive to fulfill the dreams of the City's citizens and improve services as well. He or She does not have to be a politician in fact it could be a definite advantage not to be. I do believe an elected Mayor should live in and preferably work in the City. I do not have a vote in this process but I hope the people of the City have the courage to go for it. Business, Investors and Residents will not beat a path to your door forever unless you welcome then. A part time Leader of the Council cannot be the best way to deliver success. Recent decisions prove No One is looking at the big picture and making things happen. An elected Mayor would remove obstacles to progress not create them."

Don -Wirral

" As strong leadership is needed in any major UK inner city context an elected Mayor is the only way forward, not only for Liverpool but most large urban cities in the UK. "

Giles - Toxteth

" I moved back to Liverpool in July after living in Manchester for a number of years. Seeing so much investment and development there, I feel very frustrated by some of the missed opportunites in Liverpool. I support the idea of an elected mayor for our city wholeheartedly, it's just what we need to drive this city well and truly into the 21st century, and stop it from becoming a second rate, run down and forgotten small town! Good Luck! "

Andy

" Whatever views people have on the issue of an elected Mayor, at least you are giving people the opportunity to have their say. Liverpool is undergoing a fantastic makeover right now and has the opportunity to once again regain its role as a major world city. But investors and developers need to have a clear understanding of our municipal business plan as well as belief and confidence in its forward continuity and delivery. "
